The Migration of People From Asia to America: A Case Study in Hawaii

The United States has been a country of immigration since its inception, but historical evidence shows that there is far more immigration than ever before. Most people assume that immigrants have always come here from Europe or South America, and rarely are they aware that we have also welcomed other cultures into our shores. One example of this multicultural history can be found in the case study of Hawaii, which immigrants have predominantly populated, often referred to as the “Island Ecosystem.” Today, most people are Asian due to the Hawaiian Islands’ geographical location on one side of Oceania and Japan on the other (Chappell 1). Because Hawaii has these two influences on islands so close together, united under one state, it is relatively easy for an individual who holds Japanese or Hawaiian heritage to migrate between Japan and then another place in Oceania with his or her family members on both islands (Chappell 2). However, this situation only arose after World War II when large numbers from Japan migrated home with their families (Chappell 4). Though this change did not occur immediately after World War II because Japanese immigration had already been occurring since 1885 (Chappell 3), it brought with it new problems within this state as well as high levels of unemployment among native Hawaiians because many natives expected these new migrants to work at low wages just like they had done during World War II when factories needed cheap labor (Chappell 3).
