Since then, it has been an American state with its laws, currency (dollar), flag, military, etc. It is now a US state with its laws too! Two U S states have had their independence recognized at least once by other countries: Vermont & Kentucky. Vermont’s independence was officially recognized by Great Britain in 1677, while Kentucky’s was in 1779 when France realized it during King Louis XVI’s reign! Both U S states had been under British rule since 1689 when England took over control from Spain during King Charles II’s reign.
